I moved to China in 2018 to study Mandarin. I ended up staying. Over the years I built real relationships with factories, learned how Chinese manufacturing actually works, and became part of the supply chain rather than just a buyer looking in from the outside.
When I started spending time in Kenya, I kept seeing the same pattern. Entrepreneurs were paying too much to import from China, not because the products were expensive, but because the process was broken. Too many middlemen, surprise charges at the border, and no clear landed cost until it was too late. A lot of people were buying from local resellers who had already imported, just to avoid the complexity.
I was in Chengdu, inside the supply chain, speaking the language, knowing exactly how it worked. I had access to platforms like Pinduoduo and 1688 where Chinese buyers shop, not the Alibaba prices built for overseas buyers. So instead of watching, I started helping.
From 2021 I was informally sourcing for Kenyan entrepreneurs. In 2024 I formally launched Pamoja Imports. Today I split my time between Chengdu and Nairobi, working directly with our ground team to make sure every order is vetted, fairly priced, and delivered right.
